Tempe hosts Flying Tomato Festival

Thousands of people recently came out in Tempe to have fun while they took part in the city’s Flying Tomato Festival.

The event kicked off at Kiwanis Park with games, music, and a series of announcements. Once that part was finished, a horn blared and the fruit began to fly.

The festival, which is fashioned after the La Tomatina Festival in Spain, takes place in cities all across the country, and is billed as “The World’s Sauciest Party”. It is designed to not only provide participants with a chance to enjoy themselves and meet others in their community while getting some fresh air and exercise, but also to raise funds and awareness about the issue of feeding those who are going hungry and providing clean water to all.

Those who took part in the main event needed to be at least 14 years of age, and a special area was set aside for younger kids so they could get in on the action too. A printer that also does graphic design can create special T-Shirts that people can wear while they hurl the tomatoes. They can then keep them as a souvenir of the day.

The partner for the event was Action Against Hunger. According to the organization, it works in 45 countries and has provided help to more than 9 million people.
