A new large-scale and vibrant public art piece will be coming to the Mill Avenue underpass, between Apache Boulevard and Broadway Road along Mill Avenue in Tempe.
Titled “Sun Garden,” the art will have sculptural elements inspired by nature that will go upward from the terraced planters already along the west side of the underpass. The translucent material of the cultures will catch sunlight and project shadows of different colors along the surfaces, and will change throughout the day as the sun rises and sets.
Creative Machines, Inc. and Jospeh O’Connell, an artist based in Arizona, were selected to design the artwork based on a national competition. Fabrication of the artwork is currently underway.
There are 15 garden-like sculptures in the artwork, and each is made from a colored polycarbonate materials and steel. Once the site has power, the lighting features will be installed that will fill the walls at night with color.
Local Print shops can help spread the word about such unique projects with Posters, Flyers, and other printed materials.
Mayor Corey Woods said that this new public art piece will be distinctive not only for the neighborhood but for the people who go through the underpass on their way to work or school, a meal in downtown Tempe, or to a play at Arizona State University.
The project is expected to be completed sometime next spring.
