Parade about to make Tempe bow

It’s just about time for Tempe to once again play host, as Wells Fargo will soon be presenting its 21st Fantasy of Lights Opening Night Parade this evening.

This year’s theme will be ‘Winter Wonderland’, for which more than 50,000 parade spectators are expected.

Neighborhoods, local organizations, and businesses will be participating this year. Approximately 50 lighted units will be marching down the street, including camels, dogs and other parade-trained quadrupeds, including with equestrian units.

Balloons, floats, novelty units, clowns, and marching bands will also make their appearance. Motorized vehicles, such as fire trucks, the Grand Marshal, VIP convertibles, and city service vehicles like trash trucks will be decorated from front to back fender in lights. Precision drill teams will be strutting their stuff, and of course Santa will be the highlight of the night for the youngsters.

Each unit in the parade will have at least 2,000 display lights. Commercial entries in the parade will want to get that banner printing done as soon as possible. Snack vendors will be along the route offering holiday fare.

The Tree Lighting Ceremony at the end of the parade will be presented by State Farm. Santa will be seated to hear children’s Christmas lists requests and have pictures taken.

The parade steps off tonight at 6:00 pm in Downtown Tempe. It will start at 3rd and Mill and end at Center Point Plaza.
