Major warehouse retailer to join shopping center in Tempe

Sam’s Club, the warehouse retailer that is a division of Walmart Inc. based in Bentonville, Arkansas, will be coming to the Tempe Marketplace.

The new warehouse will span 155,000 square feet and will have a fuel station. The location will be on E. Rio Salado Parkway - the property is currently a large dirt lot with a construction fence around it. Banner printing is often used at such sites to announce to the public about upcoming projects like this.

Vestar Development Co., based in Phoenix, is the developer of the warehouse. Executive vice president of development for Vestar, Jeff Axtell, said that Sam’s Club has been looking to expand to Tempe Marketplace for quite some time, and expects that it will be an ideal addition to the shopping area that is already home to key retailers that include Best Buy, Target, and JC Penney. He added that many customers will drive further to shop at the Marketplace once Sam’s Club is operational.

Once this Sam’s Club opens, it will be among eight other existing clubs in the area that include Gilbert and Chandler in the East Valley. Walmart is planning to open 30 clubs across the United States over the next several years.

Vestar expects to begin construction on Sam’s Club in the spring and to open in early 2025.
