Community and Tempe police officers come together for BBQ

An event was held on July 15 that brought together Tempe and Arizona State police officers with the community over lunch.

The law enforcement officers were provided with barbecue and shaved ice by Chapman Collision Centers, as well as other companies in the Tempe area as a means of saying thank you. While at the lunch event, the officers had a chance to speak one-on-one with members of the community in a relaxed environment.

According to Arizona State University Police Officer Bennett Elrod, although having the lunch provided to the police officers was great, it also provided a real benefit by enhancing the officers’ relationship with the community. He pointed out that a significant part of policing is dependent on how the community and police officials are able to work together.

In addition to bringing officers and the community together, police department also utilize Brochures to promote public safety, give examples of how their departments work, and suggest ways the public can help them.

The event was not only about food and fellowship, donations were also gathered by the 100 Club of Arizona. The group is raising money to provide for families of firefighters and officers killed in the line of duty. A 100 Club volunteer, Amanda Fry, explained that these kind of events ease tensions among all parties.
