Tempe athletes will want to hit the gym and put on those running shoes. Soon, it will be time for Ironman Arizona, which is North America’s most popular urban full-distance race.
Contestants begin the grueling challenge with a Tempe Town Lake single-loop 2.4-mile swim that will have a mass start. Next, they will bike 112 miles through the Sonoran Desert on a three-loop course. Finally, spectators will line the 26.2 mile course through Papago Park and around Tempe Town Lake to cheer on the runners as they complete the event on foot. Some banner printing may be in order here.
The event offers 50 qualifying slots for entry in Kailua-Kona Hawaii’s Ironman World Championship. Three major categories for the event will be Professional, Physically Challenged, and Age Group. The 13 age collections begin at age 18 and go to 80+ years. Competitors do not need to qualify to enter the race, but getting a shorter distance race under their belts before the big day is advised.
The Ironman Village will have booths featuring official Ironman merchandise, bike shops, Ironman exhibitors and other products and services. The general entry fee will be $700 per athlete. The Professional Prize will total $75,000. Last year, the total number of athletes competing in the Ironman reached 2,800.
The races will be held November 16 in Tempe.
