Arizona hockey team submits plan for arena in Tempe

The Arizona Coyotes are looking to move to Tempe.

The team has submitted a proposal to the city for a new hockey arena near Priest Drive and Rio Salado Parkway adjacent to Tempe Town Lake. The new arena would cost $1.7 billion and be part of the Tempe Entertainment District which includes shops, restaurants, and other attractions.

The location of the new arena in the Entertainment District would enable fans to shop, walk around, and attend a Coyotes game. In the heart of the district food will be available at the Coyote theater. There is a potential to build more apartments and hotels in the area to attract residents and visitors. Such districts often turn to flyer printing to promote their activities and potential projects in the district. Private investments will fund the arena although the Coyotes will ask the city to be able to collect revenues from city sales taxes related to the arena to help pay for additional costs of $200 million.

The team needed a new space as their lease at Gila River Arena in Glendale was not renewed after 18 years. The city is looking to use that space for other events.

The process to evaluate the plan is expected to take several months and will include extensive examinations, with opportunities for feedback from the community.
