Area theater presents an American classic

For all of Tempe’s Gershwin aficionados, Arizona State University Gammage Broadway Across America Series will be presenting the Tony award-winning musical ‘Porgy & Bess’ early next month.

The play features the music of George Gershwin with lyrics by his brother Ira. Additional lyrics and the book were written by DuBose Heyward. A 23-piece orchestra will be rendering Broadway classics such as ‘I Got Plenty of Nothing’, ‘Bess You Is My Woman Now’, ‘Summertime’, and ‘It Ain‘t Necessarily So’.

Set in Catfish Row in Charleston, the title character Bess is played by Alicia Hall Moran, and is an attractive lady trying to put her controversial past behind her. Meanwhile, courageous crippled Porgy’s role is taken by Nathanial Stampley. This production is a new staging of the Gershwin brothers’ masterpiece, in which Alvin Crawford plays the villain Crown and Kingsley Leggs is Sportin’ Life.

Tony-winning director Dianne Pulus has helped whittle the original four-hour American Folk opera down to a two and a half hour production for today’s contemporary audiences. Poster printing has been updated to reflect the new changes.

Curtain time will be 7:30 pm for the June 3 through June 8 shows, while the matinees on the following Saturday and Sunday will be at 2:00 pm. All shows will be performed at the ASU Gammage Theater, 1200 S. Forest Avenue, Tempe.
