Phoenix book club focuses on Pulitzer Prize winner

A Phoenix-area book club has selected the novel Trust by Hernan Diaz as the next book to be discussed during its October meeting.

The Ironwood Book Club, located at the Ironwood Library in Phoenix, meets once per month to talk about a different book for an 18-and-over discussion group. The Pulitzer Prize-winning Trust was chosen as their next book.

Diaz shared the coveted literary award in 2023, alongside Barbara Kingsolver’s Demon Copperhead. Trust focuses on a New York tycoon who uses the 1929 stock market crash to make a personal advancement.

The novel, released in 2022, weaves its story together from four different points of view – the third-person narrator of a fictional historical account, the baron Andrew Bevel attempting to write his own story, the memoir of his secretary, and the journal left behind by the financier’s wife, Mildred, who passed away. Through its narrative of examining the lives of people at either end of the financial ladder, the very value of money itself is questioned.
