Independent rock artist headlines Phoenix show

Phoenix’s Crescent Ballroom is hosting a performance by singer-songwriter Shawn James this September.

As part of his Flew Too Close to the Sun Tour, James is supporting work from his newest album, Passage, released earlier this year, with “Icarus” being one of the lead singles.

Despite more than a decade of experience creating music, James continues to be an independently-driven artist, including elements of the gospel music he grew up listening to in the South Side of Chicago. He also plays metal, folk, blues, and R&B, with rock and roll being the common throughline of all of these subgenres.

With Passage, the album represents a retrospective of his entire career so far, incorporating the singer-songwriter naivety found in his first album, 2012’s Shadows, with the more refined and sophisticated production of 2019’s The Dark and the Light.

While the new work is not a concept album like his previous effort, the Western-focused Vengeance from 2023, Passages still has an overarching theme of introspection, emotion, and overcoming isolation and darkness through hope.
