Charley Pride grew up in Mississippi, the son of sharecroppers, but dreamed of playing major league baseball. An injury derailed these plans, so he turned to another love: music.
In the 1950s, he made several demos in Memphis, but real success came with his third effort, “Just Between You and Me.” in 1966. The single soared to the No. 9 spot on Billboard's Hot 100 list, and won him a Grammy nomination.
He performed at the world-famous Grand Ole Opry in 1967, only the second African-American performer to do so. His appearance started a run of hits that saw him put eight records at the No. 1 spot between 1969 and 1971. In 1971, Pride released “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin'”, which sold over a million copies and earned him the Entertainer of the Year award from the Country Music Association, as well as its Top Male Vocalist award, which he won again in 1972. Pride has continued recording and touring ever since.
A review of Pride in concert says:
"Charley Pride sounds every bit as good today as he did 30 years ago."
Now 82 years old, Charley Pride will be at the Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino on October 30, at 8:00 pm. Using poster printing can attract attention to special events like this.
