Blues legend turned movie star plays in Chandler

Chandler will soon be graced with the sounds of the blues from legendary musician Buddy Guy.

Guy is considered so influential that he was one of the first instrumentalists to utilize the feedback and distortion of an electronic guitar as an intentional element of the music. The technique was used by acts such as Jimi Hendrix and Radiohead in subsequent years.

While the 88-year-old bluesman had an indelible influence on rock, even he can admit genres like the blues and jazz just aren’t being played on the radio as much as they used to. The blues falling out of fashion was one of Guy’s motivations for recently appearing in the blockbuster horror film Sinners.

In Sinners, Guy plays Sammie, a blues musician in his twilight years, still playing at the same Chicago club of his younger days. The scenario mirrors Guy’s own life, who calls Chicago home but grew up in Louisiana. In an interview, Guy explained he agreed to cameo in the movie in order to raise awareness about the blues as a musical genre.
