Tumbleweed Park in Chandler will host the city’s celebration of Arbor Day this November.
Though Arbor Day is typically celebrated in April, Chandler hosts its event in the fall to optimize tree-planting in the southwest desert climate.
Since its inception in the late 19th century by a Nebraska newspaper editor, J. Sterling Morton, the focus of Arbor Day has been planting trees and advocating for their value to the environment. In fact, a single fully-grown Indian Rosewood tree is estimated to provide $2,000 of value to the environment over the course of two decades.
On the first ever Arbor Day, on 10 April, 1872, it is estimated that more than a million trees were planted in Nebraska as part of a contest with prizes offered to the community that planted the most trees.
Chandler’s Arbor Day celebrations include learning opportunities about trees and other family-friendly activities. The event also provides Chandler residents with a free native 5-gallon tree while supplies last and instructions on how to plant it.
Only one tree is allowed per household. Each tree recipient must provide proof of being a resident of Chandler. And the trees are available on a first-come, first-serve policy.
