Chandler schedules holiday festivities

Chandler has an unusual holiday tradition that it invites everyone to enjoy once again this year.

Ever since 1957, the city has made its community Christmas tree from tumbleweeds. This unique tradition, typical of the Southwest, draws visitors from throughout the area. The Park Operations Division handles this project, collecting tumbleweeds from throughout the city, until they have at least 1,000 of them. They attach the tumbleweeds to a Christmas tree frame made of wire, standing 25 feet high.

Once they have attached the weeds to the frame, workers spray the tumbleweeds with 25 gallons' worth of white paint, followed by another twenty gallons of a flame retardant material. The tree is finished off by being sprinkled with 65lb of glitter, and then about 1,200 lights are attached.

The tree lighting is a hugely popular event, with over 15,000 people expected to be on hand to watch Mayor Kevin Hartke and City Council members throw a switch to light up the tree. However, the tree is not the only fun activity that evening. Also on the schedule is a visit to Santa's House, traveling performers, and the Parade of Lights.

The event is set for the Dr. AJ Chandler Park, from 4:30 pm until 9:00 pm, on December 7. Santa's House will be open from 4:30 pm until 9:00 pm, with the Parade of Lights scheduled for 6:45 pm. The tree will be lit at 8:00 pm. Flyer printing can be used to create a schedule for attendees of events like this.
