Chandler company using drones to monitor utilities

A local business is planning to sign an agreement with a regional utility by which it will use drones to inspect generating stations and power lines.

Since the agreement is not yet finalized, Skynetwest owner Noah Ruiz was unable to name the company, but says his efforts could increase the company's revenues by over $100,000.

In 2015, Ruiz discovered that unmanned aerial systems (UAS), commonly called drones, were increasing in use, and saw an opportunity to start a business by using the devices to retrieve data. He teamed up with Chandler Innovations, which has helped him grow his business, Skynetwest.

Chandler Innovations is a business incubator that helps entrepreneurs develop their ideas and business by offering free assistance to organizations that want to increase their operations, or launch a new business. Skynetwest has been with Chandler Innovations for over a year now, and a new company like this can distribute Promotional Products to increase brand recognition.

Using drones for inspections offers several advantages, including the fact that it is more expensive to do them manually, and can sometimes pose dangers for individuals, who do not gather as much data as the drones. The UAS can get into tight spaces, plus the company's clients can perform inspections and review data from their computers more quickly than they can analyze the results of visual inspections conducted by inspectors.
