Fredericton to host world curling tournaments

Two of curling’s more unique global tournaments will be coming to New Brunswick this spring as Fredericton hosts the World Mixed Doubles and World Senior Curling Championships.

The two events are hosted together, with play alternating across multiple rinks. Mixed doubles curling, having recently been introduced to the Olympics, features teams of one man and one woman instead of the typical same-gender quartet, with modified rules to result in a faster-paced game. This will be the final opportunity for national teams to earn points towards qualification for the 2026 Olympics Mixed Doubles tournament, with 20 teams from around the world competition.

An open entry event, the World Senior Curling Championship attracts top curlers from around the world above 50 years old, including both male and female tournaments. Matches are played to 8 ends instead of the standard 12. This will be the second time that Fredericton has hosted the combined event, following a previous successful hosting in 2013, and the first time the two events have been in Canada in eight years. Sporting events like this often use methods like banner printing and social media to help attract locals and recognize the event’s history.

The 2025 World Mixed Doubles and World Senior Curling Championships will take place at Fredericton’s Willie O’Ree Place from 27 April to 3 May.
