Fredericton play to bring classic novel to life

The Birch & Teal theatre company will be bringing a classic story to the Fredericton stage this September with a short run of Little Women: The Broadway Musical.

The play is an adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s novel about four sisters in 19th century America trying to find their place in the world. The stage musical was adapted by Jason Howland, Mindi Dickstein and Alan Knee, and premiered on Broadway in 2005 before going on tour. The stage musical dramatizes scenes from the novel as well as the stories the character Jo writes.

The Birch & Teal adaptation features local acting and musical talent from the Fredericton area, with the four March sisters played by Jill Pelkey, Marianna Mills, Katie Hazzard and Kathleen McGroarty. The musical is one of just a few productions that the company does each year, with months of preparation involved. Local theatre like this often draws on community support such as secondhand stores for costumes and Print shops for advertising and programs. Promotional material emphasizes the emotional appeal of the story:

“With beautiful songs, a few good laughs and a heartwarming story of family and friends, this energetic adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's classic celebrates enduring bonds and chasing dreams.”

The Birch & Teal production of Little Woman: The Broadway Musical will be staged from September 11 to 13 at the Theatre Bernard-Poirier in Fredericton.
