The group was founded in 1966 by men who bonded mining in tunnels under the coast of Cape Breton, and bills itself as North America’s only such chorus. The modern incarnation aims to remember the mining industry and lost comrades. The group’s performances include vocal renditions of songs like their signature “Working Man”, traditional rites, and stories from Atlantic Canada’s mining history.
The Fredericton performance will be part of the “Diamond Sunset Anniversary Tour” which aims to promote the group’s recent album Diamond Sunset as well as celebrate their 60th anniversary. In addition to traditional venues, the tour has included a residency at the Miners Museum in Glace Bay.
This concert will feature a guest appearance by Juno-nominated fiddler Colin Grant. Touring shows like this often use methods like poster printing and radio advertising to help connect with local music lovers. Advertising for the Men of the Deeps show places an emphasis on storytelling and history:
“We invite you to share in a sixty-year legacy that continues to shine on, not in coal, but in memory, community, story, and song."
The Men of the Deeps Diamond Sunset 60th Anniversary performance in Fredericton will take place on the evening of November 6 at the Fredericton Playhouse.
