Fredericton museum to celebrate historic trek

The Fredericton Region Museum will hold be holding a commemoration event and special geocoin search for the 104th New Brunswick Regiment of Foot this February, telling the story of a perilous trip over two centuries ago.

The Regiment of Foot saw men walk over 1,100 kilometres from Fredericton to Kingston, Ontario to support Upper Canadian forces in the War of 1812. The exhibit will feature a short interpretive presentation on the event, as well as a walking tour on why the journey became famous for its severe conditions and hardships.

The event will also feature a geocaching trail, challenging participants to find hidden containers with the help of a passport booklet. Individuals can record the date, location, and code of each geocache they find. The first 40 who log at least 15 caches can receive a commemorative geocoin for the 104th Regiment. There will be over 30 cache locations along the St. John’s River and throughout New Brunswick.

This project is an extension of the Museum’s geocaching program, and is the result of a partnership with the St. John River Society, Fredericton Tourism, the New Brunswick Museum and the Friends of the NB 104th. Modern museum exhibits often combine high-tech tools with time-tested brochure printing and informative signage.

The Fredericton Museum Region’s March of the 104th Regiment of Foot event will take place on the afternoon of Saturday, February 7.
