South Charleston goes Celtic

South Charleston revelers will be heading to the 10th Celtic Calling Gathering coming for five days in early March.

This annual Celtic Calling Gathering includes athletic events, with the 5k Run/2K walk beginning at 9:00 am at Spring Hill Cemetery Park and Arboretum, 1555 Farnsworth Drive. Runners will be treated to bagpipes along the route and the whole event will have a festive atmosphere. Registration is available online, and the 5k Kilt Run will cost $25 while the 2k Kilt Walk will be $20. These prices will go up after February 15.

Other activities will include traditional Celtic music and dance performances, concerts and music sessions, cultural education, and workshops, Highland-style athletic events for both adults and children, Irish Road Bowling, a dog show, and the Capitol Street Parade will round out the celebrations.

Vendors and crafters will be selling Celtic-themed items. There will be a Celtic brunch, open-mic, poetry events, and five one-act Celtic staged readings.

Stationery printers often use pictures of Irish cultural events on their spring notecard sets.

One of the most culturally significant events of the gathering will be the Kirkin' o' the Tartans taking place on the last day. This will be a worship service honoring Scottish heritage and clans through a special bagpipe processional and recessional, choir, fiddle and harp music, blessings, readings and presentation of tartans (known as kirking).

This year's Celtic Calling Gathering will take place from March 4 through 8 in various places in and around Downtown Charleston.
