South Charleston gives key to city to retiring police chief

Chief Brad Rinehart, the head of the police department in South Charleston, received the symbolic city key at the council meeting last Thursday.

Chief Rinehart had recently announced his retirement after spending five decades working as a police officer in the Kanawha Valley. He worked for the Charleston Police for 28 years before accepting the job of police chief here in Charleston – a position he has held for 19 years.

The use of Business Cards has increased among police officers who have found them to be an effective and convenient way of enabling witnesses and other members of the public to be able to keep in touch.

At the meeting where he received the key to the city, Rinehart spoke of the officers he has worked with, emphasizing that he believes that the department will continue to function well in his absence. He went on to say:

“Lot of emotions. This is a great town, great mayor. I've lived here for 20-something years, raised my son here. I love these guys. We've been through everything. I felt like a police chief, but also felt like a father. The mayor had the most faith in me in the world."

During his tenure with the South Charleston PD has worked to advance law enforcement across West Virginia. Chief Rinehart’s retirement becomes official this Friday, October 23.
