New outdoor seating ordinance given green light

The village board of Menomonee Falls has recently approved a motion for restaurants on Main Street and Appleton Avenue to put out dining tables on sidewalks.

Planning staff reports suggested that the ordinance is an economically suitable way to bring life the Menomonee Falls Village Center.

Mark Fitzgerald, manager of the village, stated that it is common for businesses to have outdoor seating and adopting the idea might encourage citizens to be more active in the downtown area, where the town is trying to revive commerce.

At the meeting last month, some board members expressed concern over the type of furniture businesses could put outside and wanted to limit it to portable lightweight furniture, but the city decided that seating needs to be able to withstand harsh weather, so molded plastic will not be allowed. In addition, restaurants must turn in a picture of the furniture in order to receive approval. Fitzgerald added that rules about the ordinance will be strict at first, because they can be adjusted later should the need arise.

A printing company can print the ordinances using official letterheads and all the required information. Officials would simply need to fill in the blanks and sign. It can also make flyers for businesses to advertise their new outdoor seating, which the businesses could post around the village.
