New basketball coach appointed at Menomonee Falls

Menomonee Falls has hired Derek Woelffer as the new coach for girls’ basketball. Craig Amundson, the previous coach, said he would be leaving after this year.

Woelffer has a profound résumé that includes scouting, training, community efforts, and fundraising. He went to Marshall High School and Cardinal Stritch University. Before taking this position, he coached boys’ basketball on the junior varsity level and acted as the varsity assistant. He has also served as a long-term substitute for special education in the school system.

On taking up the role, he stated that forming an environment of success and creating a family atmosphere for students and alumni alike is important. His coaching style is influenced by what he learned from Coach Diener at Cardinal Stritch, emphasizing defense and teamwork when playing offense.

Ben Farley, who coaches for the boys, gave him high praise, as did Amundsen. Woelffer's coach in college recommended he apply for the job since he believes he has the makings of a good role model and knows how to lead sports teams. Dave Weber, a member of the Hall of Fame, also praised Woelffer's coaching ability, describing it as “focused” and “true”.

Many school teams sell calendars to raise money for uniforms and other expenses, and even print custom business cards for their coaches to display their positions.
