What's Happening in Germantown, WI…

Historical property saved by village

Citizens of Menomonee Falls recently made their voices heard about the Village Centre's historical site.

Tate Boho, the owner of the single acre lot on the corner of Main Street and Hoyt Drive, asked the planning commission to reconsider their decision on refusing to allow it to become an orthodontist office. On February 3, commissioners once again denied his plea – the second tie they had done so.

According to decision-makers, Boho's appeal did not show a significant amount of research when it came to the increased traffic that would arise and the decreased property values if the plans were changed. However, it was noted that the number of residents who came to town meetings to oppose his plan played a part in the decision.

Civil War doctor William Hoyt bought the property in 1869, and it is often suggested to have played a part in the Underground Railroad. Although there is no evidence of this rumor, many residents have an emotional connection with the house and consider it to be a major part of the community, hence they are willing to live without the extra commercial space.

If the house is considered part of the community, residents might consider hiring postcard printing services that could put a photo of the house on the postcards and make the wider public are of its heritage.
