Group awarded for environmental initiative

The University of Wisconsin in Madison has given two awards to Menomonee Falls resident Kyle Powers and a team he heads.

A graduate of Marquette University High School, Powers is majoring in Geological Engineering and Geological Sciences. His team Uptica won the Global Stewards Sustainability Prize, which comes with a $5,000 grant. Uptica also won second place in the Dvorak Energy Prize, which comes with grant of $1,500.

The team developed a way to reuse plastics through a color sorting and shredding machine and a 3D printer. With the grants, the team has started on the project by talking with people in San Louis, Costa Rica. They are currently trying to obtain more grants to get the project going faster.

They plan to travel to the Caribbean country so that women can work with them and improve the economy there. According to Powers, taking care of the population is part of the environmental aspect. It gives single women a way to provide for themselves and their children, and can also help the average household since Costa Rica has communities in poverty.

The Wisconsin Energy & Sustainability Challenge is a contest to motivate students to create viable energy sources and ideas. The Wisconsin Energy Institute, which is known throughout the United States for clean energy, helps fund the challenge as part of its association with the University.

The university could have a printing company make formal certificates as part of the awards.
