What's Happening in Germantown, WI…

Germantown opens virtual charter school

Students who are looking for more flexibility and freedom in their educational schedule can benefit from a new schooling option that has opened in the Germantown School District.

Registration is not restricted to people with German School District residency which means that people from nearby towns such as Menomonee Falls can register. This new form of learning is a virtual program open for students from Grades 6 to 12. Tuition for this programs is free and students can enroll on part-time or full-time courses. Promotional products like pens and notepads are great for school-related programs.

The school is planning to open in the fall and is already taking applications. The Germantown School District decided to create this program in order to retain students who would have otherwise been lost to virtual programs organized by other school districts. According to Superintendent Brett Stousland, students were enrolling out of the district at an alarming rate. Germantown School District receives $12,000 in state aid per student but has to pay out close to $8,000 for every student who leaves. Stousland said:

“So we're losing dollars, and also we recognize there's obviously a need and a desire and that students want an option of an e-type school. So we started looking into the idea of a charter school, and that's what a lot of other schools have.”

Numerous other districts in the Milwaukee area such as the Kettle Moraine School District are also working on starting virtual charter schools.
