Gadget provides solution for severe drought
Drought challenges are escalating more rapidly than certain crops in southeast Wisconsin can handle. However, two nearby farmers are ingeniously transforming these obstacles into opportunities.
The farmers are in possession of a novel instrument to aid with the irrigation of their crops – a solar-powered irrigation system referred to as a water reel, which is improving water-use efficiency.
Gary Thompson, proprietor of Lannon Sunflower, expressed how it has been an unusual year for rainfall. He mentioned that his sunflower farm located in Menomonee Falls has received merely three inches of rainfall since the beginning of May. He also said:
Southeast Wisconsin is currently experiencing a drought, but Thompson views this as an inherent aspect of farming. What distinguishes him is his unique approach to addressing this challenge.
Thompson mentioned that the device he is using for irrigation propels water upwards to a height of 40 feet. Amidst this drought, he emphasized that this tool becomes a game-changer. An intriguing feature is its ability to retract and automatically turn off. Devices tend to feature the logo designs of the companies that made them.
Terry Vlossak from Full Harvest Farm is using a similar device with a twist. His approach to addressing the drought entails placing a drip tape along the center. This tape effectively permeates the soil, precisely at the plant's base, allowing the plant to absorb the moisture with minimal water wasted.

"So the crops are really struggling here."
