Yakima is planning to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a twist—holding an Iron Chef competition at the same time.
“Iron Chef” is a Japanese television series in which professional chefs and the “Iron Chefs” of the title have a cook off, which is a timed contest based on one ingredient. The show premiered in 1993 in Japan and ran until 1999. A new version began airing in 2012.
The Japanese program became so popular it spawned an American version called “Iron Chef America.” The format is the same, in which guest chefs battle one of the eight American Iron Chefs, building their Menus around one specific ingredient. The American Iron Chefs include Bobby Flay and Geoffrey Zakarian.
For the Yakima contest, competitors will be asked to cook an Irish dish, and Guinness Beer must be used to prepare the food. Dance attendees will be able to sample the dishes cooked by the competitors and cast a vote for the one they like best. The winner of the competition will be given a St. Patrick’s Day Iron Chef trophy. Organizers of contests like this can use banner printing to announce the upcoming event.
Entries for the Iron Chef competition are being accepted now and interested cooks can register by calling 509-575-6166. The dance and competition are taking place simultaneously, from 1.30 pm until 3.45 pm, March 15, at Harman Center in Yakima. Admission is free.
