Yakima jazz fans have a reason to cheer, with a concert they are sure to enjoy being planned.
The Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra Sextet is comprised of D'Vonne Lewis, Alex Dugdale, Michael Brockman, Michael Glynn, John Hansen, and Jay Thomas. All are members of the 17-piece Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra (SRJO), but travel separately to perform at events in the region. This time they're coming to Yakima to explore the works of jazz legends Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk.
Miles Davis was a jazz trumpeter and composer who was a strong influence on jazz in the late 1940s and 1950s. His playing, in contrast to contemporaries like Dizzy Gillespie, was unornamented and direct, and his style, which epitomizes cool jazz, changed jazz music. Davis's album “Kind of Blue,” released in 1959, is one of the most famous in jazz history.
Thelonious Monk was a jazz pianist who first started out with on classical piano. In 1941, he was playing in Harlem at Minton's Playhouse, where he was a member of the house band and aided in the development of the style of jazz called bebop. He learned his skill alongside legends like Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker.
