Yakima recently changed its rules for on-street parking.
The city council approved changes to its parking enforcement regulations. First, unlicensed vehicles are not allowed to park on city streets. In addition, the council addressed the problem of vehicles left sitting in one spot for long periods of time. Owners will not be allowed to leave their vehicles parked in the same place for more than 24 hours. In addition, they will have to move the vehicle at least a block, instead of just a few feet.
However, the council did not mandate a change to the way in which owners are notified about their vehicles. If a vehicle has been in the same spot for 24 hours, the city is still allowed to mark it, after which the owner has 48 hours to park it elsewhere, or the city will impound it.
Although one councilmember objected, saying it was possible someone could go on vacation and never see the notice, the measure passed 5-1. However, another official said since enforcement is based on receiving complaints, they do not believe it should be an issue. The only real changes are the fact people have to move their cars a longer distance, and there is a small fine.
The new regulations go into effect in mid-October. Poster printing can be used to create signage for changes like this.
