A concert of works by classical and contemporary composers is coming up in Yakima.
The string section of the Yakima Symphony Orchestra will begin the evening with Mozart’s celebrated serenade, “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik,” and close the concert with the Serenade in E major by Dvořák, a standard of the string repertoire.
Other artists on the program are Ricardo Castro, Bao Yuankai, William Grant Still, and Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate. Castro was a Mexican composer who served as music director of the National Conservatory of Music until his death in 1907.
Bao Yuankai is a Chinese composer, educator, and musician. His work includes children’s music, soundtracks for both television and film, musicals, cantatas, chamber music, and symphonies.
William Grant Still has been called the “dean of African-American composers,” and composed nearly 200 works, including five symphonies and nine operas. Jill Whitman will be the soloist for Still’s work, playing the Ennanga, a type of African harp.
Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate is a contemporary Chickasaw composer who honors his culture in operas, ballets, and symphonies. All his compositions were commissioned by musical organizations in North America and are performed worldwide.
The concert is scheduled for January 13 at the Capitol Theatre, with Lawrence Golan on the podium. The doors will open at 6.15pm for a pre-show Concer Talk, which will provide information about the composers and their works. Organizers of events like this can use brochure printing to create programs for the audience.
