Yakima residents will soon be able to enjoy themselves as the Downtown Association of Yakima (DAY) organizes special events for the city, as it does at this time each year.
Every December, DAY and the city work together to select the official Christmas Tree, which is then placed in Millennium Plaza. At the conclusion of the Christmas Lighted Parade, the tree becomes the center of the official Tree Lighting Ceremony. The parade winners are announced at the ceremony. In addition, DAY is responsible for placing lights in the other trees in Millennium Plaza, making the entire area glitter.
DAY is also responsible for another tradition—on Saturdays in December, horse-drawn wagons leave from the plaza every 20 minutes, giving free rides to residents. The wagons, which hold about 20 people each on a first-come, first served basis, take passengers on a ride throughout the city’s downtown.
DAY is also the driving force behind the Snowflake Award. Each year, the award is given to businesses located in Yakima’s downtown. DAY gives a prize for Best Exterior Decoration, and another for Best Interior Decoration.
Decorating an entire city downtown is a challenge, but banner printing can be used to provide a set of identical holiday decorations, such as those depicting Christmas trees. Banners are sturdy and can stand up to outdoor use, even in poor weather.
