The Yakima Symphony Orchestra’s season-ending concert celebrates the composer’s birthday by recreating a program that took place 50 years ago. That performance was led by Brooke Creswell, the founding music director of the orchestra, and its success led to the creation of the orchestra as it currently exists.
The all-Beethoven program consists of his Piano Concerto No. 3; Symphony No. 8; and the Choral Fantasy. The conductor is Lawrence Golan; with piano soloist Daria Rabotkina; and the Yakima Symphony Chorus, led by Justin Raffa, Chorusmaster.
The Eighth Symphony is not as well-known as the Fifth or Ninth; one article describes it as:
“. . . one of the shortest, weirdest, but most compelling symphonies of the 19th century.”

The concert begins at 7:30 pm, but there is a “ConcerTalk” preceding the event. Beginning at 6:25 pm, it will be hosted by Dr. Jeffrey Snedeker, a professor at the Central Washington University School of Music, and the Principal Hornist of the YSO. At these talks, Dr. Snedeker discusses the composers to be played, their lives, and then goes into an in-depth discussion of the works on the program.
At the present time, the “YSO: Beethoven Bash” is scheduled for May 30 at the Capitol Theatre. Interested parties should consult the orchestra or theater website to stay abreast of any schedule changes.
