What's Happening in Woodinville, WA…

Woodinville hires consultant for schoolhouse project

On February 7, the Woodinville City Council agreed to hire a consultant to assist in the search for a developer for the Old Woodinville Schoolhouse project.

The council approved a contract valued at $110,000, which Leland Construction Group will use to devise a strategy for development, after which it will begin the search for a developer for the project.

The effort to redevelop the building, which is located in downtown Woodinville, has been ongoing for a decade. The council turned down a proposal made in October 2015, by a developer who wanted to renovate the building and transform it into spaces for a museum, wine tasting rooms, and restaurants. Although many people found the proposal attractive, it would have required the city to construct a parking facility at a cost of millions of dollars.

The current effort is looking for a proposal that includes ideas for developing the entire three-acre site, not just the schoolhouse.

The schoolhouse is a brick structure that was built in 1909, and comprises four rooms. In the 1930s, it was expanded using funds provided by the Works Progress Administration, a federal agency. The building served as a school until the 1980s, then it became the Woodinville City Hall from 1993 until 2001. The building is currently unoccupied, and officials worry it could fall into disrepair unless it is restored.
