The 5th Avenue Theatre Awards are modeled after the Tony Awards®, and were first presented in 2003. The ceremony is the creation of Bill Berry, the producing artistic director of 5th Avenue Theatre. He came up with the idea in 2003 to give drama students the same kind of recognition and support that has been offered to high school athletes for years.
In order to be considered for the award, high schools from throughout Washington State ask 5th Avenue Awards Committee to consider their productions. The committee then appoints a panel of theater professionals who visit the high schools to see the shows. Productions like this are often promoted with poster printing.
At the ceremony, students will perform excerpts from their productions before an audience of their peers, which is expected to number about 2,000, giving them the chance to perform before a large audience.
