What's Happening in Woodinville, WA…

Woodinville explores history of lake

In 1916, engineers cut through land in order to connect Lake Union and Lake Washington, and the Woodinville Heritage Society will present a program that describes the project this week.

The project, which resulted in what is known as the Montlake Cut, had a number of effects in the area. The cut lowered Lake Washington’s depth, launched the Ballard Locks and the Lake Washington Ship Canal, altered the streambed of the Sammamish Slough, and affected the holdings of pioneers along the river in Woodinville.

Jane Morton, who formerly taught in Bellevue, will be the program presenter. Morton is the Eastside Heritage Center’s education coordinator, and has been with the organization for over 10 years. In addition, she teaches children’s programs at Bellevue Botanical Garden.

The talk, entitled ‘The Lowering of Lake Washington’, is based on Morton’s research into 12 Eastside personalities who were affected by the opening of the locks and canal.

The presentation is scheduled for this Wednesday, October 21, at the Brightwater Education Center. The center is part of the Brightwater complex, and is located at 22515 Highway 9 in Woodinville. There is ample free parking, and the program is also free. The lecture is schedule for 6:30 pm until 8:00 pm.

The center could work with a newsletter or poster printing company to devise posters announcing the talk.
