Woodinville City Council approves swap

During a recent meeting, the Woodinville City Council voted 5-2 to allow Sierra Construction to build a new headquarters building on its property.

In order to make room for the construction, the city has agreed to relinquish a right-of-way on that property in return for an option to buy land nearby.

Richard Collins, who owns Sierra Construction, wants to build a parking lot and a one-story, 13,000-square-foot structure near NE North Woodinville Way and NE Woodinville Duvall Road, but faced some opposition from area residents who were concerned he might want to develop the land for further commercial uses. In answer to the concerns, he offered the city the option of buying the land for the same price he paid - $250,000.

The city agreed to accept the option, and then voted to relinquish the right-of-way. The option will not be effective until rezoning and other procedural issues are completed, clearing the way for building the offices. Once these measures are approved, Woodinville has one year to buy the land.

Collins paid the city $20,000 for its right-of-way, and agreed to establishing a permanent easement that would give the city the ability to put roads near the new Sierra building, should the Wellington neighborhood grow to the point where additional access is needed.
