What's Happening in Woodinville, WA…

Tree removal project delayed

Woodinville will be losing at least 57 trees soon, when the state removes them because they have root rot.

The trees are just north of the interchange of Route 202 and SR-522 in Woodinville, and are slated to be taken out in mid-November. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) chose Razz Construction Inc., a Bellingham company, to take down the trees, and hoped the work could be completed by the end of October. Recently, however, WSDOT spokesman Justin Fujioka said work would probably not start until sometime in the early part of November.

Fujioka said there is a risk that these trees will shed limbs during windstorms, which is why they wanted the work done as soon as possible. Fujioka recognized that a storm could cause problems no matter when the work started, but maintenance crews will keep an eye on the trees. He also said that since windstorms in the area of Puget Sound are usually accompanied by strong southerly winds, and since the trees are on the north side of the ramp to the 522/202 interchange, there is less risk of limbs falling onto the highway than there might be.

The project will cause delays for Woodinville drivers, and detours are anticipated. Municipalities like these can benefit by working with flyer printing companies, who can create mailers listing when work will be performed, and what routes will be closed.
