Timely Halloween play to open in Woodinville

A play that is appropriate for the season will open soon in Woodinville.

The Woodinville Repertory Theatre will perform “Ghost Writer” by Michael Hollinger. The three-character play centers on Franklin Woolsey, an author, his typist Myra, and Woolsey’s wife Vivian. Myra becomes enmeshed in the process a writer uses to create their works and although she and Woolsey are attracted to one another, they repress it. The unexpected happens when Woolsey dies—Myra continues typing his book, claiming she is channelling him. Vivian is jealous and it is uncertain whether Myra really has some mystic connection to the deceased author, is using his work as a springboard for her own, or is pulling a scam.

Hollinger notes that he got the idea for his play from an anecdote he read about the great novelist Henry James. James’s secretary, like Myra in the play, took his dictation, and claimed he continued to dictate to her following his death. This led to Hollinger’s play, which examines the nature of artistic collaboration, and the currents that underly personal relationships. Audiences for events like these enjoy learning their background, which organizers can provide by using brochure printing to create programs.
