Iconic brew set for return
Fans of Rainier Beer, a well-known Seattle brand, will have their favorite beverage available again soon, but it will now be brewed in Woodinville rather than Seattle.
Pabst Brewing Company, which makes Rainier, has concluded a deal with Craft Brew Alliance of Portland, makers of Widmer Brothers and Redhook, among other beers, to use Craft’s Woodinville Redhook Brewery to make what it will call Rainier Pale Mountain Ale. The ale is the newest version of the classic Rainier Beer.
Rainier Beer and Washington State have a shared history; the beer was brewed and sold in Seattle as early as 1878, before Washington was a state. In the 1970s, Rainier acquired a number of different owners, until Pabst bought it, and moved its brewing operations to California, where Rainier Beer is still made.
The new ale will be brewed in Woodinville starting in the spring of 2016, but with a different recipe to its famous predecessor. Pabst says the recipe for the ale was inspired by a brew the company made just after prohibition was repealed. Rainier Beer is a lager, while the new recipe will produce an ale that will be darker and hoppier than the beer many people remember.
Pabst officials might consider creating promotional products, such as pens, with the name of the ale on them, and distributing them throughout Woodinville.
