The Spokane Public Library will hold a contest for teen bakers who are interested in running their own businesses.
The Great Startup Bakeoff Competition is an event where teens ages 14-18 can experience what it is like to form and operate a business in a teamwork-heavy environment. The contest will accept 50 participants, who will then be split into 10 different groups. The bakers are responsible for developing their marketing strategies, prices, and creations to sell at the event. Participants can register as team leaders or bakers. Bakers will get to pick which leaders they want to work with on the first night of the contest.
There are several items that the teams can choose to create, including bread, cookies, muffins, and biscuits. Each team may only bake one item at their booths, and the baked goods can only use five or fewer ingredients. Some of the available ingredients for the competition are lemon juice, dried fruit, chocolate powder, and powdered sugar. The venue will provide the necessary equipment for the event. All teams can keep the money they earn at the competition.
The baking competition will be held this weekend, from Friday, May 31 to Sunday, June 2. Tickets for teens to take part in the event are $50 per person. A similar bake-off will be held later this year during winter for bakers who are 19 and older. Libraries in charge of similar competitions may use flyer printing to advertise their contests.
