Spokane ballet to tackle fairy tale

Gonzaga Dance will be presenting a new ballet in Spokane this January, featuring a new spin on a classic fairy tale.

The story of the ballet stems from Hans Christian Anderson’s classic fairy tale about a tiny girl searching for a husband of the same size. The ballet will translate the play to a colourful and motion-filled dance performance, with roles filed by the students of the Gonzaga Dance program. Promotional material claims:

“this retelling of Thumbelina is a fun and inspiring performance for all.”

This adaptation will feature choreography by the dance program’s Founding Chair Suzanne Ostersmith, and feature original musical compositions by Gonzaga alumnus Nic Marshall. Ostersmith stepped down as program head after 25 years prior to this season, but will return as a choreographer and creative voice under new department chair Cynthia Gutierrez.

There will be four performances of Thumbelina across the weekend, with matinees and evening shows to accommodate different audiences. The ballet will be followed by a Student Choreography Showcase and Spring Dance Concert in April. Dance and ballet programs like this often use methods like poster printing and social media to encourage community members to attend.

The Gonzaga Dance performance of Thumbelina will take the stage from January 23 to 25 at the Magnuson Theatre in Spokane. Discount tickets are available for youth and students.
