Painted pianos coming to Kennewick
A team of other artists and musicians has launched a Tri-Cities Painted Piano Project, and a few pianos have been set up throughout the Kennewick area. The goal is to have eight pianos at shops, restaurants and other public outdoor and indoor spaces by the end of the summer.
The idea is the brainchild of Michael Nemo, an artist from Richland in the Tri-Cities area, who was hanging out late at night in Montana when a teenager began to play a piano.
Soon others joined in, playing instruments and singing. The piano was a part of a public art project that places painted pianos at locations throughout a city. Nemo decided to bring the idea back to his hometown area.
Organizers of public art projects can use poster printing to spread the word and to let people know how the project works. According to Carissa Pitkin Jones, a member of the board for the Painted Piano Project, the pianos "are accessible to everybody."
So far, there is a piano at the Kagen Coffee & Crepes in Richland and one at the Caterpillar Cafe, also in Richland. Nemo painted the piano at the Caterpillar Cafe, using image of some of his favorite musicians.
Pianos are in the works for several other locations, including SCRAP Tri-Cities in Kennewick and the Academy of Children's Theatre in Richland.
