Local library revamp finally off and running

After much delay, renovations are underway at the Prosser branch of the Mid-Columbia Library.

The postponement of the project turned out to be a good thing in terms of the cost of the project. The remodel will end up costing the library much less than was expected.

Initially, the renovation was expected to begin in the fall of last year, and officials at the library signed a lease for a temporary location back in August. The budget at the time was $250,000, but when the call for proposals brought in a single bid, library officials revised the request for proposals in the hope of attracting more interested parties.

Ultimately, the decision was made to separate the project into two parts. Total Site Services, with a bid of $141,000, was awarded the bid for the construction of the library. Meier Architecture Engineering, based in Kennewick, was awarded the design side of the renovation, with a bid of $27,000. In all, the two bids saved the library nearly $80,000.

The library can use postcard printing to let patrons know of its temporary location, in a commercial building on Chardonnay Avenue, and to advise on when the revamped library will be open again. The renovations are expected to be completed by the end of next month. The current renovation is the first time the library branch has undergone any major changes since it first opened in 1972.
