Kennewick teacher recognized as top educator

This year marks a bright point in the career of Kris Mars, who will receive the school district's Crystal Apple Award. The award makes her eligible for the statewide Teacher of the Year contest.

Mars has spent the past six years in the classrooms of the Kennewick School District. She began her career as a reading specialist before moving on to teach second grade at Hawthorne Elementary School. At the start of the current school year, she moved to a third grade classroom for the first time.

Her fellow faculty and students have nothing but good things to say about Mars. The school's principal, Craig Miller, told the Tri-City Herald that she is:

"…the kind of teacher everyone deserves growing up."

One of her students said to her:

"I never had a teacher as good as you."

Mars decided to change careers and become a teacher after the death of her husband, who was also a teacher and coach. She pursued the field of education as a way to honor his memory and to give back to the people who supported her after he died.

Mars is one of nine other teachers to receive the Crystal Apple Award this year. Schools that give out award to top teachers can use stationery printers to create the certificates and celebrate their contributions.
