Kennewick student's art heads to the capitol

A piece of art created by a high school student in Kennewick will travel all the way to the State Capitol Building, where it will be permanently on display as part of a collection of student art.

The art work, a sculpture named ‘Rainbow Fish’ after the main character in a popular child's storybook, is the work of artist Morgan Haberlack, who says that she channeled some difficult experiences in recent years into creating the piece.

Haberlack has lived in several different places over the past few years, including Kennewick's homeless shelter for teenagers, called My Friend's Place. She is currently living with a family during her last year of high school.

At a recent school board meeting, Haberlock was poised and graceful while speaking to the board, who had brought her in to congratulate her.

‘Rainbow Fish’, a ceramic piece, was selected from among thousands of other works of art at a regional show. It then earned the top honor at the Superintendent's Art Show in 2014. Although she is proud of her achievement, Haberlack admits that it will be a little challenging to say goodbye to such a personal piece of art.

She will be heading to the Capitol Building in Olympia in a few weeks to see her work. School board can make use of professional Stationery printers to create a certificate in honor of successful students like Haberlock.
