Kennewick graduates ask school to change policy

After graduating high school, some students go onto college, some go right into the workforce and some join the military. Two Kennewick graduates who enlisted in the military after graduating are now hoping to change one of the school district's policies.

Jazmine Brown and Madison Dunn are campaigning the district to allow graduating seniors to wear red, white, and blue cords over their graduation gowns. Currently, the only honor cords allowed at the school district's graduation ceremonies are those worn by members of the National Honor Society.

Neighboring school districts in the Tri-City area allow students to wear the military cords during graduation. Officials from Kennewick state that its policy is designed to keep the focus of the ceremony on educational achievements during high school.

Students who want to change a policy at their schools can use Print shops to create petitions and to Print letters to various officials.

Dunn, who will be joining the navy, already spoke to the staff at her school about wearing the cords. She also reached out to the school about the issue. Brown plans on attending the board meeting on June 20 to discuss the subject and is hoping to get the support of the community.

Although students who join the military do not wear cords during the ceremony, they are asked to stand up and the branches of service they are joining and their names are read out loud.
