Construction to begin in the summer for new park near Kennewick

By this time next year, the Yakima River Gateway, in West Richland near Kennewick, will be ready for people to use.

Construction on the park and river area is scheduled to begin in July. The aim of the project is to make the area along the river more inviting for residents and to better introduce visitors to West Richland. At the moment, the riverbanks are not developed and feature rocky areas and rough terrain, making them difficult to use for all but the most agile visitor.

Plans for the park include adding a 52-spot parking area on the other side of the road, adding a ramp and stairs down to the river, and building a path under the bridge to get to the park on the other side of the road. There will also be a boat launch added for non-motorized vessels such as canoes and kayaks, and a short 1,200-foot trail will be put in. The city can also use printing services to put together kiosks that will tell visitors the story of the area's plants and animals.

Certain aspects of the project are already underway, including replacing certain sewer and water lines before the new development begins. The organizers of the project have also completed an environmental assessment, as required by law.

The public is welcome to have a say on the assessment. Any comments must be received by May 4.
