Car wash fundraiser supports Kennewick child

Superheroes are not just the things of comic books and legends; a group of volunteers in Kennewick showed that superheroes exist in everyday life, too.

A group of volunteers from the Gold's Gym in Kennewick and the Tri-Cities Fever Football team got together on August 2 to flex their superhero powers and raise funds to cover the medical expenses of five-year-old Gabriel Scheel.

Gabriel was sent home from school on May 13, showing symptoms of what seemed to be the flu, and is then believed to have suffered a seizure at home. Since that day, he has been at Spokane's Sacred Heart Medical Center.

The insurance company is not covering the cost of Gabriel's medical treatments or hospital stay. For the past few months, a number of fundraisers have been held to raise money for the boy's medical bills. The most recent one featured a car wash, run by volunteers. Those who brought their cars to be washed contributed a donation to help the boy.

According to Gabriel's family, he is slowly starting to recover. He recently was taken off of a ventilator and began the first of a series of treatments at the end of July.

Gold's Gym is still collecting donations for Gabriel. Those who promote causes like this often use a local printing company to create posters and flyers letting people know how they can help.
