Renton recognized with awards for important projects

Two Governor’s Smart Communities Awards have been given to the city of Renton to recognize two projects of distinction.

The two projects that have been recognized are the revival of South Lake Washington and the Family First Community Center (FFCC). The Smart Planning Legacy Award was given to the South Lake Washington project while the Judges Merit Award was given to the FFCC.

Achievements by local governments and their partners are recognized by the Governor’s Smart Communities Awards. These awards promote thoughtful planning and development that contribute to a prosperous economy, thriving communities, and sustainable infrastructure.

News of such awards and their significance is often made known throughout a community with poster printing.

The FFCC is a new facility that combines recreational and health services with a community center. It came about as a partnership with HealthPoint, the Renton School District, the city of Renton, the Family First Community Center Foundation, and the support of local and regional legislators. It is an example of a building that integrates new uses of the land in an area that is predominantly residential.

The transformation of South Lake Washington has taken place over 20 years and is an innovative partnership of development and land use planning. The partnership of the city and Boeing resulted in a mixed-use lifestyle retail center that also improved access to the lake and approval for additional projects in the area.
